News RoomUPenn Study Confirms that ESOPs Improve Firm PerformanceJanuary 4, 2007 - A new independent review of existing ESOP research was completed by Steven Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania on January 4, 2007. Freeman analyzed thirty years of research on the effects of ESOP adoption and employee ownership on U.S. corporations. His study confirms that on average there is increased productivity, longevity, and profitability in employee owned firms. Freeman concludes that the large volume of research on ESOPs is overwhelmingly positive and credible. He encourages researchers to increase methodological variety and innovations as well as to more fully engage critics in order to bring the phenomenon of employee ownership into mainstream consciousness.
